Ok I'll give an unbiased opinion. Here's the long and short of it. Most if not all of the modern day radio sets all in the end do the job of guiding the model where it needs to go, the same goes for your Hitec set. When it comes to the basic four channels that are used on your average aeroplane then your radio will do the job of basic flying just as well as the next brand.
Now here comes the down side. Hitec never really made a proper effort of keeping up with the modern day advances in transmitters, they seemed to have focussed a little more on servos and such. Their software and functionality in their transmitters stayed in the past I'm afraid and even their newer higher end transmitters are very difficult to use and functionality is in alot of cases lacking. To fly the basic 4-channel aeroplane and in some cases even quite advanced models they will do the task just as well as the next set. It's really only when things get very tricky that your more popular sets will put the Hitecs to shame to be honest.
Now of course when it comes to competitive flying and a little more speciality RC flying you'll find a whole new world of why the Hitec might not be the best choice, doesn't mean it cannot be used at all but ok you get the point.
I've owned my fair share of transmitters in the past and today still have JR, Sanwa and Hitec transmitters in the cupboard.
